This is the question that has the most impact when you’re starting out, but I think it has a lot of validity today. If people only think about work in terms of money, then they won’t be satisfied and they won’t want to do what they are doing. But if they think about work in terms of how they feel about their work, then they will be satisfied and they will want to do more.
We all have a lot of jobs to do. And they all have different levels of satisfaction. The bottom line is that the people you are investing your money in are the ones who are going to be the happiest. They are the ones who are going to be doing their best work. You are not going to find the happiest people, unless you are a unicorn.
A lot of people say to me: “but I do a lot of work.” And I say: “not for a living.” In fact, if you have a business, you are going to have a lot of jobs to do. You have to have a business to run. To succeed in business, you need to have an idea. You need to have a plan. You need to keep your eye on the prize.
The business of running a business is a lot like a fire. You have to put out the fire. But unlike a fire, your business doesn’t have a fireman—and that fireman usually isn’t you. In fact, a lot of times you don’t even need a fireman. If your business is going into a fire, you need someone who cares, who is going to get you out of there.
