How to Get Motivated to Workout

Working out is tough, and getting started is the hardest part. There’s always an excuse not to workout. But once you get in the habit of exercising, you’ll find that it’s hard to stop.

There’s plenty of material out there to help you like workout videos or self-help books. They can be helpful, but you need to find what works for you.

We’re not all motivated by the same things, and everyone has different reasons they want to start exercising. Here are a few ideas on how to get yourself moving.

Create Reasonable Goals

Running a marathon might be a great goal, but if you’ve never run before, start with something a bit more manageable like a 5k. Your goal can be as small as making it to the end of the block or the driveway.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when taking up a new sport is overexerting themselves. This will only lead to injury and is counterproductive.

When setting your goals, keep in mind your age and general health. The goals for a teenager should be different for someone in their thirties or fifties.

If you’ve had an injury, even if it was years ago, take it easy. It takes time for the body to recover.

Make it Fun

Running on a treadmill can feel more like a mind-draining chore than something enjoyable. Keeping yourself entertained while working out changes that.

Listening to music is a classic way to keep an upbeat attitude while exercising. Audiobooks and podcasts are great if you want to learn something while working out. They’ll also help keep your mind off the exercise.

If you’re working out inside, stay fit while watching your favorite show by moving the TV close to the treadmill or doing some cardio workouts in front of the screen.

Cut out the Pain

Athletes use the phrase, “no pain, no gain.” It’s good to push yourself, but putting up with sore muscles isn’t fun. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons most people avoid the gym.

Products like athletic gels, CBD oil, and heating pads relieve post-workout pain. CBD oil and protein powders can even be used as an ingredient in smoothies to help you stay hydrated before your workout, which helps prevent pain

Working out in moderation and alternating your routine will help you prevent pain and help you stay on track for your goals.

Find a Workout Buddy

Working out is a great way to catch up with your friends. A good gym body will keep you accountable and motivated.

Ideally, you’ll pick someone who will encourage you and has similar goals.

If you don’t know anyone who wants to exercise with you, try joining a fitness class at the local gym. Or look online for some Zoom classes or people looking for workout buddies.

At-home workouts groups are ideal if you don’t feel comfortable going to the gym but want to build a sense of community. Very Well Fit has a list of some of the best online exercise classes.

Reward Yourself

Getting in shape isn’t easy. You deserve to take a day off or treat yourself. The best way to do this is to select your reward before you start working out.

If you need extra motivation to keep on track with your goals, plan a reward for each milestone.

Maybe treat yourself to a nice dinner every month that you stay on track. Or plan a spa day.

The important thing is to find something that motivates you. If spas or nice dinners don’t fit your budget, reward yourself with a day off to be a couch potato.

There are many health benefits to working out, and once you get in the swing of things, you’ll probably find that you won’t be able to stop!

The most important step to exercising regularly is the first. So, get out there and get moving!
